  • My grandma went through this

I was raised by my grandparents. My grandma lived this life. She lived in France during WWII and had 2 of her brothers sent to camps, only one came home after the war ended. She was 9 when the war started and 15 when it ended. 3 of her schoolmates died from stepping on mines when the Germans retreated. The stories she told me just didn’t make me realize what it was really like for her until I listened to this book. This booked really helped me see what she went through. She often used words in this book, but I did not fully understand the weight of those words, or the weight of what she went through, until we listened to this book together. She is 91 and blind now, and so she can only listen to audio books , so we listened to it at the same time. It changed my whole perspective on who she is and what she went through before coming to the U.S. with my mom when my mom was 5 years old and after the war ended. Thank you Kristin Hannah for the greatest gift I have ever even given - the gift of time with my grandma and bonding with her on a deeper level I never realized even possible

I’ve never in my life cried while reading a book and this one did it for me. This book is a page turner in the best kind of way. My first Hannah read and isn’t going to be my last. This woman paints a picture so clear you can actually get lost in the writing and see a movie in your head while reading. As an avid reader this is hard thing to do. This book should be on everyone’s list of things to read. Marvelous just marvelous.
